Disrupting the shipping market

When the web is at it’s best it works as a disruptor of hurdles and information gaps. Making information accessible and creating more efficient markets. A lot of effort and focus is put on how media sectors are forced to change. But still there are lots of traditional industries to be disrupted by information in efforts to create competitive advantage that relies on creating value rather than using uneven information distribution to get a competitive edge.
ImportGenius is such a service for the US market, which access public data regarding import/export data (somehow the concept makes me think of Art Vandelay) and give importers a more equal market to compete on.
Another example of how shipping information creates efficient markets is how stock analysts have started to use ImportGenius to keep track on specific companies, for example regarding upcoming product launches. Watch a video of the service here.
It’s always interesting to discover web services in markets where the natural fit didn’t seem natural at first sight.
