Equally bloated companies to match
This morning I started to go through Luke Wroblewski’s latest presentation from VALA08 (good presentation as always). Since there were some interesting examples of the Yahoo UI I went back to Yahoo portal for the first time in a while, logged in to my mail and was presented with this view.
OMG.
That truly is the definition of a bloated startpage for a mail application. Display ads, news, weather(!) and much more is apparently more important than showing me what’s relevant, my new and unread mails.
This got me interested, if the MicroHoo deal might make even more sense in a UI way. So I created a Hotmail account and logged in. This is what I got.
The same bloated view, news, ads and everything else but my inbox. Why just not focus on making a great mail application? Because they don’t have that focus and never will.
Both companies are dying (on the web) since none of them seem to have a true understanding on how to create real and sustainable value. This just show how similar their corporate DNA is.

Dying in synergy. I agree.
Short-term the compounded company would do more of the same, but only until the users get fed up with the bad user experience and leaves Y!/MS for competitors like Gmail, where the user experience is fundamental philosophy around which the revenue streams are added, with success.February 11th, 2008 at 7:49 am. Hey, I made a similar observation recently. If this sample of yahoo’s bloat is groanworthy, my screenshot sequence of yahoo’s landing page growth over the past decade will probably induce nausea, but it is illuminating as to how Yahoo! has already put itself in the toilet.
