Theme of the week: porn
To end the week with a little porn post seems appropriate after all the buzz about it and the latest rumour that AdultFriendFinder is getting acquired for more than $1 billion. As Joakim points out people still pay for porn and sex sells, for sure.
There’s an interesting article about AFF and it’s founder Andrew Condru. Among other things he discuss why people are inclined to pay for porn:
“…people would pay more to be part of a small group of like-minded souls. After all, you don’t shop for a mate at Wal-Mart; you want to go to a cool bar. And if that bar brings in the kind of crowd you like, you’ll pay more for the drinks. The average AFF user pays $20 a month; others shell out as much as $50.
“The more niche you get, the more value per member,” Conru explains. “People pay money for a filter.” He wasn’t bothering to charge members of his religious dating site, BigChurch.com, until the guy who ran it insisted. Registrations jumped immediately. “He was right,” Conru says. “On the Web there are not enough filters for sincerity.”
Apparently it’s AFF affiliate program that have driven their success, dubbed the “Adsense for porn” it drives crazy money to site publishers. As the most lucrative affiliate program in an industry they’ve been able to create both reach and depth of their marketing, not the easiest thing to do in their business.
When Morten Lund says he’s interested in the porn industry and this rumoured sale it might be indications of a change of the business climate in an industry that’s, for obvious reasons, not always attracts the most established companies nor high rolling venture capitalists.
He can’t sell because AFF is far too big for any adult company to afford and far too dirty for any mainstream company to stomach. And because most investment banks don’t want to get involved with pictures of people having sex in their own bedrooms–let alone kitchens, living rooms, motel rooms, airplane bathrooms, and Renaissance fairs–he’ll likely never get a fair price for going public.
Or could he?

It's clear that people pay unimaginable amounts of money for porn and sex, but security against the sneaking of children into such channels should be of top priority.
