Joost: Our new TV guide? by Jonas

The possibilities of Joost has previously not been so clear to me, probably because I haven’t really analyzed to any greater extent. But reading about the metadata focus and how they deploy several open source frameworks really grabbed my attention.

Is Joost the good stuff?

NewTeeVee’s article highlights some very interesting things such as being able to tag shows and maybe more importantly, the possibility to comment and assign comments to a show timeline.
One example of possible usage is provided by David Friedman: “imagine watching a show like Heroes once, and then watching it again with comments turned on to see what other people caught that you missed”.

It’s all about content discovery

As we all know and as this comment points out, the web has revolutionized the content discovery for text. Movies, however, are still relatively hard to find and discover.

Youtube and all the other video sites has been truly remarkable on content discovery concerning shorter video clips, old tv shows and amateur video in general. However Joost is aiming for the high quality content that can be provided through content deals and a P2P platform.

The social features is the tool for content discovery of course. If they get it right, then maybe they can be THE distribution platform of high quality content, not only to computers and individuals but more importantly, between people and groups.

But I still thinks it sucks that you have to download a desktop client. But that’s another story.
