Microsoft brings social networking to the television
Interesting strategic direction taken by Microsoft. By adding Microsoft Messenger Live to the Xbox 360 they’re introducing easier ways of communication for the already vibrant Xbox community.
This is once again an evidence of the importance to have a platform to launch social functions from, by introducing social functions to the Xbox in smaller chunks, the users have managed to adapt and learn each function. Most importantly they have been motivated to do so. Since new features are targeted to enhance the gaming experience, gamers are motivated and inspired to get started with the features.
As noted by the NYT article, today most game publishers release their biggest games for all platforms, which results in differentiating strategies looking towards online services and social features.
Microsoft has, for a long time now, targeted the television as a platform and it’s interesting to observe that it might not be the Windows Media Center that takes them to it, instead the gaming community is the front-runner.
