User registration: earned not required
The adage, “like a used car salesman” comes to mind when looking at how new applications are treating user registration. If it’s sleezy and obtrusive, it’s likely to do more harm than good. Short and sweet, should do the trick, right?
Saturn, auto producer, took an approach to eliminate the “welcoming” salesman in the late 90’s at their dealerships. Instead, customers showed themselves around, browsed through computer catologs and then, if the had a question, approached the sales desk. Today, Saturn has employed a “Home Test Drive” program.
I was looking at the relaunch of Scrapbook and noticed that “Get Started”, meant… get started. No required registration?… a test drive.
I think the idea of web-services earning registration (and not requiring them) is a nice differentiator as more and more mainstream users adopt online serivices.
