Must read if you’re building a web app by Jonas

Some very interesting slides (download them now!) from a panel at SXSW called Web App Autopsy. You’ll find some discusson on conversion rates, support and incomes concerning four web apps (Wufoo, Feedburner, Blinksale and RegOnline). It provides some very insightful facts about the business of web apps. Especially Wufoo, who brings up some interesting points about how they sent out 7 000 beta invitations and only 50 of those ended up being paying customers (at half price).

For me the interesting part was that three of these companies (Blinksale, Wufoo and Feedburner) are all companies originating from the “web 2.0″ frenzy, with Blinksale and Wufoo being heavily inspired by the 37signal philosophy. However, the company that makes most money per customer, by far, is the old and traditional RegOnline (went online back in 1996). $131 per customer. Pretty impressive… with 50 employees, they’re easily the largest company in the comparison as well. RegOnline does apply another pricing model than the others, not going after the “$10-a-month-segment” but instead aiming for larger companies and organisations that are willing to pay $150 for an event. A more traditional way of approaching the company market, and it’s important to remember, today, when everyone seem to be building products for themselves and their freelancing colleagues.
