Podesk: a new video publishing software by lk9

We’re always happy and a little bit excited when we discover new software or applications that are a little bit unique, especially when it’s being developed right here in Sweden. Therefore, we’re pleased to have been able to ask some questions to Bertrand Gonduin, who has developed a video conversion software called Podesk.

Can you give us a little background on your previous experience with the web and videos?

I started as a Video-Jockey/visualist in the late 90’s, playing in clubs, galleries and theaters. Soon I got interested in video on the web, I worked for 3 years as Image Director for the first European WebTV (Canalweb) in 1999-2002. Then I decided to start programming and got a degree in multimedia, because existing video software were not good enough for my needs.

I’m an interactive visuals composer, I invent my own instruments such as online video mixer, visual synthesizers and physical interfaces. I also create live shows with dancers and musicians where I perform as a visualist.

Can you give us a brief Description of Podesk?

Podesk Publisher is an application that helps you to publish videos on the web: It takes care of all the boring task/steps : capture, encoding, uploading, html coding and podcasting. With Podesk it becomes a one step process : one single drag and drop and the video is published.

Podesk combines this desktop utility with an open source blog platform (Podesk Server). All the tools needed for setting up a video podcast distribution are included. But Podesk Publisher can work with any web service.

Have you received any funding?

So far, self-funding, but I’m now looking for money in order to grow.

How is Podesk different from other video conversion software?

On the desktop side, you have many video conversion applications, but only a few of them handle the conversion/publication process in just one click. On the server side, most of the video conversion services available today are using the same converting tool (FFmpeg), which is open source, but they hide it under branding and closed source framework.

I also try to use a maximum of norms and standards for the files that Podesk is generating. For example, I’m using image analysis to segment videos into scenes. This information is available as a MPEG-7 file, and not as an obscure format. When your video is published with Podesk, it’s good quality, it’s usable and convertible, and you are not dependant on any particular video service.

I will quote Nicholas Reville (Executive Director of the Participatory Culture Foundation, which makes the Democracy Platform):
“Will television move online in an open and accessible way? Or will it remain centralized and controlled by a few large corporations?”

How do you envision it’s uses, or maybe which of its application are most
advantageous?

Well, no one knows the future of online video! The customers of Podesk are particularly those who are already producing videos and who want to distribute them with the maximum of independence, using easy tools. This includes among others: education, E-Learning, universities, NGO’s, companies, communication agencies and Newspapers.

Any future developments of podesk (e.g. mobile applications)?

Online editing! I have done an online video editing/mixing tool in 2001 http://www.bertrandgondouin.net/post/Symtonic-Flash-Mixer, it has to be
updated !

Concerning the distribution on the mobile, I created Podesk for mobile phones when Apple released it’s first 3GP codec in 2003. Today, the Podesk server can distribute video in 3GP, streamed or not. But I’m not really focusing on it. There is no technical problem, it’s up to the mobile phone industry to open the doors, no one will be satisfied with online videos only selected by the big corporations.

I’m not working on mobile applications, I need to upgrade my Nokia 3310!
