The Classifieds: how to find “stuff”
Everyone likes a good bargain. And everyone wishes they could get a little cash for that junk in the basement. And many of everyone like a little blackmarket every now and then.

But classifieds were user-generated content before there was “UGC”. And since ebay has driven to become a commercial jugernaut, the classifieds (those we used cut out or highlight in the newspaper before we began surfing the internet) are going as strong as ever. And pretty much as ugly as ever. Compared to today’s graphically rich web 2.0 cites, Craigslist is as simple as it’s black-and-white printed cousins. But what might not be so simple is 8 mln unique users, 2 bln pageviews/month, 23 countries and 105 cities. Additional to it’s 4 mln ad posts/month, there are 1 mln forum posts… aha a community! Strengthening its communication. Hmm… I wonder if Blocket could find some opportunity in building such a thing?
Alternatively, aggregation seems to be hot right now and I think we’ll see some significant usage from sites such as Edgeio. Where you can place an ad on any website, tag it, and Edgeio will automatically add it to it’s database (detailed description). And Digg-clones listen in, get your “digg this” widget on every ad posting… so in case one of those Dolly Parton at Scandinavium tickets hits the street, there’ll be some real news!

There’s no question there’s commercial viability in this space here in Sweden (just ask Blocket –yeah, those numbers are a little slanted), but when can we expect a significant effort to emerge? Craigslist is testing the water already, Edgeio has a bigger vision… but you never know when you might need one of these.
