Amapedia: part Amazon, part Wikipedia. by Jonas

Amazon is quietly launching new sections and services. The latest is Amapedia, the merging of Wikipedia and Amazon, or so they say. In terms of opening the structure and making it available to thousands of editors, the content should render higher quality and then with only one or a couple editors, right? It probably will work to some extent, as Alex Iskold mentioned that Amazon does have a similar function already at Amazon.com. It, currently, is not providing users with any sufficient or quality information. But Amapedia is far more open and editable, than this wikifeature. For example, it not only display prices from Amazon but also from some of its strongest competitors. This aspect may be the most important, since it shows Amazon’s position within the market… one that I’m sure they feel good about being open about. Even if Amapedia is an Amazon entity, they provide information from other companies, which directly increases the perception of quality about Amazon and also increases the retention of the site. I instantly thought, “Cool, Amazon gets it!”.. it really does increase the quality level of Amazon and also shows the ambition of the company and they do not fear competition but instead present it on their site. Sweet.

As a commenter points out, its interesting to see that Wikipedia seems to be owning the term “pedia” online now. Everything that uses “pedia” in its name is a clone. Good work, Jimmy !

It can be overwhelming and frustrating at times. How do you choose the one that works with the other ones you will love and care for, and will in return inspire, bring value and joy.
