It truly is faketastic! by Jonas

The problem of multiple identities on the web is growing and it definently relates to the previous post about the unreliable sources of web stats. Sites like this also focus on the problem that you need to hand out your email adress on every little web app you use, people just wanting to check it out is likely to wanting to use a fake adress.

I’m sure we all have our junk e-mail adresses which we use when signing up for something we know we’re not going to use very often. I know I have them. There are different routes to take, the right way to go would be by not inquiring people to give out there e-mail adresses when signing up instead just ask for a username and you’re in. How sweet would that be!? Instead letting people share their e-mail when they’re ready and wanting to be notified about your products, that’s how it should work. Seldom it does.

Multiple identities are an interesting topic. I would say I have three “main” online identities I use, with regard to different parts of my life. I don’t consider any of them to be anonymous, but I do consider there to be divisions between what I use them for. It’s not a hard line, there is some overlap. Those are just the main identities, not the two dozen email addresses that I use or the two dozen accounts on assorted instant messaging protocols or the multiple accounts on almost every web site/service I use with any regularity.

One of the biggest problems with multiple identities, in my opinion, is many site won’t let you create additional accounts with the same email address. That right there necessitates me getting another one.
