Community building with Woot by Jonas

Sorry for the slow start of the new year and it can only be excused with moving, renovating and a dysfunctional internet connection.

Since I didn’t feel that I could add much to the terrific post by Kathy Sierra on the “Dumbness of crowds” and also Beta Alfa’s long(!) post, I felt it was interesting to highlight a site that has a very interesting and active community. Woot is a site that offers daily deals, primarily on tech products and gadgets. Great prices for one product that last for one day only. Each day a new product. And they sell out their stock every day. Yesterday they sold their first product after 1 min 51 sec, which is remarkable considering that they release their new product at midnight. Besides having a great business idea their community building is remarkable, with every product released they write a long blog post with lots of information about the product and the offer. Additionally, they release a podcast on each offer as well.

Their last blog post has 131 comments and the previous has 233 comments. Not even Perez Hilton can match that amount on every post and this for an e-commerce site! It is very impressive how they embrace their community and because of their social strategy, they have turned a great idea into a profitable and successful business.
