Ray Ozzie is getting deked!
So, in the waters of Ray Ozzie’s famous speach (good discussion here) about Microsofts new direction and modification of their business model, it’s impressive to see how small companies and individuals have influenced one of the biggest corporations in the world and nudged them to revise their direction and core values. Various successful web based services have contributed to Microsoft making this shift.
But one also has to acknowledge that it’s not just the small companies that have influenced Microsoft in this decision, but other large companies, primarliy Google of course –whom really is the leading competitor that can significantly affect Microsoft’s share– but also Yahoo –whom is appealing to all the minipreneurs out there who’s building to flip. So without the developing business models of these two companies the paradigm shift of MS business model never would have occured.
However it’s interesting to see Fried’s thoughts on Google putting out all these small apps just to shift focus from their core business, selling ads, to having everybody discussing the future of a Google’s “Office” web apps. My input on this would instead be that Google is trying to multiply the ad selling platforms, instead of only limiting themselves to search results ads and homepages, all the users of applications such Google Maps, Calendar, Spreadsheet and so on will find Google AdSense all over their documents in the near future. This also means that Google can continue to offer fantastic apps for free while Microsoft will be offering more complex services at a subsription fee. So is this really a good business move for Microsoft and is Ray Ozzie the genious people claims him to be?
